November Monthly Training 11/19/16

SARCOM held its monthly training at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Newer members were given a complete overview of Com1 and all communications equipment, including the cross-band repeater. Members demonstrated multiple times their ability to deploy and break down all equipment as well as operate and manage communications for a mock search operation.

SARDUS Certification Clinic 10/27/16

SARCOM helped provide communications for the Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States Pacific Northwest certification clinic Thursday through Saturday, October 27-29. Participating dogs were tested on their skills in area search, human remains detection, trailing, and other specialty areas. SARCOM provided radio coverage that spanned across Polk County from Falls City to Independence. Congratulations to the K9 teams and handlers who passed the course!

Keizer Fire District Safety Fair 10/10/16

Keizer Fire District hosted their annual safety fair and open house for the community to learn about police and fire services, emergency preparedness, disaster relief, and search & rescue. SARCOM provided tours of our communications equipment to both adults and children. We enjoyed interacting with the community and look forward to participating again next year.

Sunrise Salem Rotary Presentation 09/21/16

The Sunrise Salem Rotary invited us to present at their weekly meeting. Members of SARCOM joined the club for breakfast, and cheered on the President and Team Leader as they presented details of how search & rescue operates and receives funding.

Update: Mt. Jefferson Search

After 7 days of searching around Mt. Jefferson, along the Pacific Crest Trail, and surrounding areas, crews were unable to find Mr. Riley Zickel, the overdue hiker who went for a trip in Jefferson Park. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. This was the longest search in SARCOM history.

Mt. Jefferson Search 07/30/16

Beginning Saturday at 1900 hours, SARCOM was called to a multi-agency search for an overdue hiker in the Mt. Jefferson wilderness area. We have been providing communications between an expansive gathering of volunteers on the ground and aircraft searching from above. Operations are expected to continue through tomorrow at this time.

Map & Compass and GPS Training 07/09/16

Last Saturday morning and afternoon, members from our team and posse participated in a map & compass class, as well as a GPS class. Special thanks to Al from posse for being an excellent instructor!

Update: Marion Lake Search

The team is home from yesterday's SAR operation in the Marion Lake area. We are sorry to report that crews were unable to locate the missing hiker after a week of searching; our thoughts are with the family.

Marion Lake Search 06/29/16

Our neighbors in Linn County have been searching since June 24th for a hiker who went missing near the Marion Lake area. Multiple teams from counties within the Willamette Valley have responded to assist with the operation. SARCOM has been requested for an all-day search tomorrow, beginning at 0800 hours.

Minto Island Search 06/25/16

At 0130 hours Saturday, June 25, SARCOM was activated for a missing person search at the Minto-Brown Island Park in Salem. Salem Police had multiple officers searching the area for about 2 hours before SAR was requested. Their officers located the missing subject as volunteers began to arrive.

Posse Training 06/03/16

From Friday, June 3rd through Monday, June 6th, members of SARCOM participated in a training hosted by Marion County's Posse at Canyon Creek. In addition to providing radio communications for posse while they explored the area, the two teams were able to share conversation, food, and a great bonfire. We had a great time at this event and look forward to joining them again next year!

Silver Falls Search 02/27/16

At 0500 hours Saturday, February 27, SARCOM was activated for a search at Silver Falls State Park. The subject went missing while hiking the previous day and stayed in the area overnight. Jeep patrol was activated that Friday evening, and personnel from posse and Drakes Crossing FD joined us Saturday. The search was concluded at approximately 1000 hours after the subject walked out on his own.
